The summer holidays are almost over and it has been a time of over-eating and over-indulgence. Christmas, New Years and two birthdays, well actually three (my baby turned 1, my big boy turned 6 and in the middle my father-in-law celebrated his birthday). Not to mention the barbeques with friends, alcoholic drinks and ice cream! If your summer sounds similar, don't throw the towel in or forget about your new year goals. It's time to re-focus and get your health and eating back on track!
Often when we think of getting on track with our food we think about cutting calories and eating less food. Whilst it seems logical to avoid cakes, sweets, crisps, ice cream or sugary drinks, you will actually have more long-term success eating more food, not cutting calories. Yes, you read that right! To get back on track and eat healthy you should actually add more food into your diet. The key is to add the right foods.
Start your day with a nutrient dense breakfast (like overnight oats and fruit), snack on fruit and vegetables, have a smoothie, add pleanty of vegetables to your lunch and dinner. By eating more food, more of the right foods, you will 'crowd out' the foods that aren't as healthy for you, keep your blood sugars stable and avoid 'sugar crashes', maintain a balanced metabolism and re-adjust your palate. (I don't want to call them 'bad' foods becuase everything can be bad if we don't eat it in moderation). By eating the nutrient dense food you will find you are more satisfied and you don't want the sugary snack in the afternoon or a chocolate in the evening.
Think of it like reverse psychology. If I am told to avoid chocolate cake, all I will think about is chocolate cake. if you really want a Coke, chocolate cake or some lollies you can have some, but before you eat them you need to drink or eat something nourishing - water, fruit, vegetables, smoothie or nuts! You should find that you want to eat less of the 'junk food' and your body will start feeling good by eating nourishing food!
Starting right now, I am 'crowding out' all the foods that I have over-indulged on during these summer holidays! I will be eating more food, more of the nourishing food that I need so I can operate at my optimal level - more clarity, more focus and more energy for a fabulous life with my family and friends!
Please share this with your mum, sister, girlfriends or colleagues and support each other in getting healthy.
Have a wonderful day,
